Hey guys, hope you had a great weekend! As for me, well, I probably worked the whole 48 hours :) On Friday, I heard about the news that Google is killing Google Reader (rss reader). It was an unfortunate news as it’s one my favorite tools. But then I thought, maybe it’s time to create my own reader with similar functionality.

I’ll be honest, I thought about creating something like this a few months ago, but it wasn’t just an RSS reader. My idea was much bigger, which will probably be phase 2 of ReaderLine. For now, I’m focused on getting the basics done.

At first I thought, oh it’s just an RSS reader, it should be easy. Well, not really. After getting into it, I realized how complex and cumbersome system it is. Managing all those feeds, pulling/refreshing, having user lists, plus a thousand other features is not so simple to create :)

This weekend was like a startup weekend for me, except I’m not building a prototype for the show, I’m building the actual product. Sometimes, I just have this urge in me to do it and do it ASAP. This was one of those times, my plan actually was to launch last night. But I couldn’t do it. It was like 2am and I still had another 3-4 hours of work to do. So I called it a day.

Here is a screenshot of the interface.

But not to worry, I still have plans to launch it in a day or so. If I can have the time after work today, It should be done and launched. Granted, my first beta isn’t going to be flawless or a complete product. But I want to get it out there ASAP.

My goal was really for it to have the following features:

  1. Simple interface
  2. Google reader like feed reading style
  3. Simple user registration
  4. Top Feeds section for everyone to see
  5. Subscribe functionality
  6. User created categories like Google Reader
  7. Import – this is the most important one. I want to import my google reader subscriptions. This will also create your folders.

That’s it, simple right? In the normal circumstances, this would have taken at least a month. But I don’t have a month, I had the weekend and it’s about 80% there.

I will need a few BETA testers to export/import their Google Reader feeds. Post a comment here if you can help me with that.

Thanks and happy Monday everyone!
